Harlem, NY, 2009. You’ve just finished performing in the home of Abiodun Oyewole, one of the legendary Last Poets, and he in approval, discusses the revolutionary impact of the piece you’ve just performed. Moments like this don’t live in an Instagram story, they exist only for those who were there to experience it. Moments like this define lives and travel as myth; stories passed on word of mouth by the few who were there, made that much more epic by the lack of grainy phone footage to capture it.
Toledo, OH spoken word artist & emcee HuntorPrey has spent his entire life sculpting the voice and pen to tell these stories. On October 27, 2020 he will present his masterwork “Hy-Definition” via Definition Music. “Hy-Def” acts as the official follow-up to HuntorPrey’s 2016 critically acclaimed EP “Running Man” and has been supported by recent single releases and stand-out single performances at Columbus, Ohio’s 2x2 Hip-Hop Festival and the International A3C Music Festival & Conference in Atlanta.
In “HyDef” HuntorPrey flips through channels of an old television set only to have each program crawl through the static to connect to the next. A sprawling multi-genre affair, “Hy-Def” is backed by heralded producers Mally the Martian (Fabolous, Jadakiss), Ill Poetic, Ben Cohen (of future beat/psych-jazz/hybrid electro duo Heavy Color), and more. HuntorPrey writes hopeful tales of chasing-dreams-like-butterflies as a child inside a society that values commodification over humanity. And all with an empathy and color of language matched by few.
Sharing life stories is nothing if life is not worth living. Beyond releasing records, HuntorPrey has continued to align his artistry with a dedication toward activism, education and health within his community. Within the past two years, Hunter has worked in collaboration with the Toledo Arts Commission to create the poetry workshop WREP. He’s worked with Fresh Water Initiative for Great Lakes water health. This past month saw HuntorPrey hosting a show in conjunction with Promedica for Prostate Cancer Awareness (News Link).
After nearly a decade of critically acclaimed releases HuntorPrey has not only learned how to masterfully thread deep narratives together within his pieces and albums, he’s learned how to thread his various careers as a writer, performer, activist, teacher, and mental health advocate into a singular art and vision within the Toledo, OH community. On a cool late summer night in Harlem, The Last Poets debated the merits of HuntorPrey’s performed piece of being something truly revolutionary. 10 years later, Hunter has proved a piece can only be as revolutionary as the character and life of the person behind the pen.
